Description: The piece uses major and minor 5-finger patterns in both hands. The dynamics range from mp to f with a crescendo. The student gains experience with accents, staccatos, slurs, and grace notes. Both hands share the same clef at times.
Purpose: The use of 3-note slurs ending with a staccato note gives the student a chance to develop “tapering” and “rolling off” gently.
Suggestions for Instruction: I first start with focusing on the 3-note slur and develop the tapering and gentle release. I show places where both hands play in the same clef and how to know which hand plays by noticing the direction of the stems.
With an imagination, the student can see fleas jumping all over the music!
